Little Austria is a woman-owned small start-up specializing in Austrian food and desserts such as strudels and cakes. Their goal is to introduce traditional and contemporary Austrian recipes to the American public by using carefully selected high quality, local and organic ingredients. All of Little Austria’s products are handcrafted, ready to eat and come in a variety of flavors.
As the name suggests, Austria is where Head Baker Helene Gallant comes from, where she was born and raised in a tiny mountain village in Carinthia, the most Southern part of the country. If you have ever watched “The Sound of Music” you have a good picture of how her home area looks like, which is surrounded by lakes, mountains and ancient castles.
What is particularly unique is the traditional food culture. Carinthian, and Austrian cuisine in general, and how it is heavily influenced by many European nations, with specialites such as Strudel, Schnitzel and Pastries.
Helene started Little Austria adventure first of all, to introduce her home country’s cuisine to the American people, but moreover to pass on the idea of taking the time to sit down and enjoy handcrafted delicacies prepared with dedication.
You can find Little Austria at Marymount Farmers Market and Westover Farmers Market in Arlington, VA. They also gladly accept your orders that can be picked up at any of the two markets. Just drop them a note via their Facebook page or website.
